what did we have at the end of world war 2? A bunch of dead people and a strong economy. We put a bunch of soldiers to work for a few years, but what about after that?

Publick works projects don't do anything for the little guy at all.
It keeps concrete and asphalt companies busy, and does keep that type of worker employed, but when the bridge is finished what do you have.. a bridge and a lot of now unemployed people, unless you put them to work building another bridge

The problem with your logic, is that it was a world wide depression, not just something caused by FDR. Also, what finally ended the depression was WWII, which could be called the largest public works job in the history of the world. The Govt put millions of Americans to work, both as soldiers, and in manufacturing plants building weapons. And there was no profit in it. After defeating Germany and Japan we didn't rape them of all of their gold, we actually gave them more money. Yet somehow all of those raised taxes, and all of that money spent, got us out of the depression. hmmmmm

It may be instead that at the onset of economic woes you can take two approaches. Spend huge amounts, put people to work, even better let the govt employ businesses by giving independent businesses huge govt contracts, and eventually spend your way out of it. It will cost a lot, it will send you into debt, and it will require raising taxes. This is all acceptable, the problem with that path is that after the woes are over, you have to get the govt to shrink again.

The other way is to do little, and let everyone suffer. Let weak business fail, let strong ones survive, and just support their growth. Eventually the strength will outweigh the weakness. This way is probably faster, but its much scarier. It also does nothing for the little guy, ie a John V working as a tile cutter who gets laid off.

Either way with the govt we are getting we are going with choice A
