We are the Angry old Men, Hear US ROAR, a poem by Charlie Champion

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

We are the angry old men

Hear us roar.

We are a lot smarter than we used to be.

Reality ,

Has forced us to learn the score.

Our bodies have gotten older

Sadly, thats no lie.

But we still have a great deal to accomplish

Before we are ready to die.

As a group we are highly adaptable..

We’ ve survived conflicts and war

Massive global upheavals

As well as social changes galore.

We’ ve seen economic boom

And we’ ve suffered economic gloom.

Our diversity has grown into a powerful steed

Our system has given us the freedom to succeed

There has always been one truth that is a constant through and through

Your skin color is irrelevant,

As long as you’re red, white, and blue.

Dogs are good for your health-Just an observation

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Just an Observation-

All Dogs are healthy, but some dogs are healthier than others.

I’ve had a dog as my Pal for most of my life, so I am very familiar with their traits. Like the fun of romping with a puppy,or  playing catch with a  frisbee. And how about the walks,  usually at least twice a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year , rain or shine, hot or very very cold.

There is a great deal of joy and unconditional love that comes with owning a dog, and also a great deal of responsibility, and as we all know, there are some hastles, and  obligations.

However; I have discovered an additional benefit a dog can bring to your life. Health and longer life, for master and dog,,  If you know where to look .

PREFACE/PRETEXT

I

The post World War II ” Baby Boomers “, growing up in the 5O’s and 60’s, were exposed to a socio economic environment, vastly different from the world of today.Familial stability was the norm. Most families consisted of a mother a father , and two children. The woman stayed home and took care of the children and the domicile. The man was the bread winner, getting up every morning, going to work, and returning home to his family every night.

Dinner time was 6 O’clock. The American family would sit down together and share a bonding experience, while discussing school, currents events and interesting gossip. These were things which we could always count on …….

The evening news on Channel 4 , N.B.C,. was straightforward and more verbal than visual . They were constantly looking for human interest stories to entertain and distract while treating journalism with the classic “man bites dog” philosophy.

Sports was a major segment of the news. In New York, baseball , was, and always has been king ..In those days,we had three Major League teams, The Brooklyn Dodgers, The New York Giants, and of course, The New York Yankees. The rivalries were intense, and involved Community pride, and passionate fans.

This was our escape into a better reality, the excitement of the “Boys of Summer”

Johnny Padres in 1955 winning the first Brooklyn World series 2-0 in Game Seven.

Don Larsen and his perfect game.

Sey Hey Willie Mays with his artistic pattented basket catch.

Don Drysdale and the immortal Sandy Kofax.

The Mick ,number 7 moving with effortless grace.

Campy, Pee Wee, The Scooter, Whitey et al..

.Simple times, happy memories.

I’ve Been Losing My Hair

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

I’ve been losing my hair

And I don’t know where.

It’s a puzzle to me

Don’t you see

If anyone finds it

If you please

Won’t you return my lost hair

To me

A trip to the Bronx Zoo is still a great trip

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I went to the Bronx Zoo on Saturday.

It rained sporatically during the day, but it was a soft, confortable rain. Sort of like the Goldilocks porridge…Not to hot and not too cold. It felt just right.

It’s been years since I’ve been there, perhaps ten or twelve.I’ve always loved the interaction with nature that the zoo  provides. As we walked through the Bronx River gate, my heart beat faster for a moment, in hopeful anticipation. The kid in me couldn’t wait.

It was still a fun day.

The breeze was filled with exotic aromas and the atmosphere echoed with a thousand animal calls.

We walked through , under and in-between the raindrops.

I met a big furry female polar bear.  (I mentally named her Beatrice) She was rolling on her back, struggling to scratch  an itch. When she stopped and sat up, she glanced at me with barely (excuse the pun) concealed supercilious disdain.I was allowed to be there to admire her, but I better not look too hard, and I should never forget that I was there by her largess.

She chewed on a stick of bamboo with great relish, glancing at me every few seconds, to make sure that I was admiring her specialness.

That look on her face was priceless. I’ve seen it before.

I have a dog. She is a Dingo, actually a Carolina dog, which ,I’m told, is the North American version.

Anyway she is obviously a creature of the wild, and reacts in ways that dogs usually do not

My dog allows me to intrude into her life. She even chooses to acknowledge me as master …sometimes.

She’s very very smart, and a very good dog, but she also has that look. The same look as that sassy polar bear princess.

We go through our lives, seeing animals on television, or in  the movies and we think we know them.

Try going to the zoo. Animals look real in real life Their skin has wrinkles, or hair, or scales. You can actually see them breath, and react instinctively.

Sometimes , reality is good.

Always pick a crowded, noisy , public place for meeting a blind date

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I looked at my reflection in the glass door, and nervously brushed an imagined speck of lint from my shoulder.

My wife had left me almost a year ago, and my friends had finally convinced me to begin dating again.

We had been married almost fourteen years, and my dating skills were somewhat erroded .My friends introduced me to the world of Internet dating .

Meeting women on the computer was a bewildering blur of technology, which had to be learned .  Talking to a monitor by typing into  a keyboard was strange at best.  Sifting out the truth from the lies was a full time occupation.

What is there about the internet that turns people into liars?

The first woman I met through  date.com was a school teacher from New York City. Her posted photo was very attractive. She was 5′5, 120 pounds, long blonde hair, big blue eyes, and an attractive saucy personality. Her name was Sharene

We e mailed numerous times, and became quite familiar and comfortable discussing a wide range of topics, including sex and sexual preferences.

When we graduated to phone contact, her voice was soft and rich, and our conversations were far ranging and increasingly intimate.

I looked forward to meeting her face to face, but a series of  familial and professional occurences  on her part, conspired to postponed our  much anticipated “new beginning”.

Most of the Summer passed before we were finally able to coordinate an initial meeting.

I drove into the City. We planned to   meet for Sunday brunch at 1 pm.

She selected an out door Cafe on 33rd St, just off of 3rd Avenue.

I got there early, and anxiously paced the street, my stomach fluttering with  excited anticipation. My eyes searched the distance , following the movement of every slender long haired blonde as they traversed the various streets surrounding my location.

Several months of e mails, phone conversations, and the exchange of a few photos, left me unsure of who or what to expect.

I looked at my watch, It was 1:15. I had been paceing the street for the better part of 40 minutes, and I was beginning to think that  this had been a bad idea.

I walked back to the Cafe. There was a very attarctive blonde waiting just to the right of the front door.

“All right”, I thought to myself.” Worth the wait.”, I took a step towards her,but before I got close, a man who appeared to be her father , exited the Cafe, and gave her a hug , and soft kiss on the cheek.

Discouraged, I turned away, then felt a soft tap on my shoulder.

” Are you Charlie? You look just like your picture, but better.”

I turned, and my heart crashed. Standing before me was a woman, maybe 5′1, 200+ pounds. The hair was blonde, and black, and grey, and very frizzy. Her eyes were blue, but the right eye was higher than her left one, and her skin was ruddy, flaking, and blotchy.

“Sharene?” I asked, hesitantly. Hopeing  against hope, that I was wrong.

Being a gentleman, and this being my first internet date, I took her to brunch. We exchanged polite conversation, then I beat a hasty retreat.

All the way home I kept shaking my head. “Who was this woman, and what happened to my attractive  blonde friend/”

Maybe she was kidnaped by this woman’s brothers, so she could steal a date.

A new Star is about to ascend to Heaven

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

A truly beautiful soul is very close to ascending to the Heavens, and to be with G-d in Heaven.

Her heart was good and true, and the special beauty she radiated all of her life brought joy, comfort and inspiration to all that knew her.

Mother Earth is soon to be a little sadder and weaker because of her passing, and I know that I will miss the inspiration that was the bounty of her love.

Soon she will be reunited with her mother, my Aunt Margaret, who’s memory has inspired me all of my life. The two of them, when rejoined together, and with several other of G-s special Souls, will make Heaven a place of warmth and joy for all eternity.

Safe and easy journey. I love you my darling Cousin, We all do.  Sleep peacefully and well.

Dear Rochelle

P S Say Hi to the Big Boss for me..

I know He is welcoming you with open arms.

This is not meant as a eulogy, but as a tribute of Love to a truly special and talented, member of the Good Guys Team.
